Fort Madison, IA – A proposed Southeast Iowa training center for first responders is in line for several hundred thousand dollars. Southeastern Community College and Indian Hills Community College will use $550,000, from the state, to develop a Regional Emergency Response Training Center. SCC president, Beverly Simone, says $350,000 will be used to construct a skills-training building on 10 acres of ground along Fort Madison's Ortho Road. The rest of the state money will be used to develop a burn building in Ottumwa. Agencies from across southeast Iowa would be able to utilize the facilities. Simone says planning for the project in Fort Madison will begin soon. She says one of the first steps will be to hire a new coordinator for the fire training services, as the current director is leaving the college. Simone says the curriculum will appeal to full-time and volunteer first repsonders as it will be based on national training programs. The state will pay out $4,300,000 to develop 11 regional emergency response training centers.
