Keokuk, IA – Keokuk has made its counter-proposal to the bargaining unit representing members of the police department. Finance committee chairman, Doug Matlick, says the city's initial offer is a 1.5% pay hike for the upcoming fiscal year. The bargaining unit is seeking a 4.5% increase for its members. The 07/08 fiscal year is the final year of the 3 year contract between the city and its police offices. As per the contract, the only issue that must be dealt with is wages. Earlier this year, an arbitrator awarded the bargaining unit a 4.5% pay hike for this fiscal year. The decision was based, in part, on the level of pay compared to surrounding communities. Yesterday's meeting was to be open, but it is unclear if any public notice was issued by the city. All subsequent negotiations can now be done in private. The city is expected to meet with the union representing members of the fire department next week.
