Macomb, IL – A political activist believes Illinois lawmakers are paying more attention to campaign finance issues, yet it's still difficult to bring about change. Illinois Campaign for Political Reform Director Cindi Canary says the ethics measure passed in 2003 was a good start because it tightened the gift ban act and provided for greater disclosure and improved reporting. But she says there is clearly room for a lot more improvement. There is no contribution limit in the state, which means those with large amounts of money can gain access and influence. Canary also believes the state should strengthen its Open Meetings, Freedom of Information, and Whistleblower Protection Acts. Canary says some lawmakers are taking greater interest in campaign finance laws and she thinks progress can be made during the spring legislative session, though she does not expect to revolutionize campaign finance practices during the session. Canary made her comments in Macomb where she spoke to a political science class at WIU. She wants students to know they have a stake in the system and should get involved.
