Keokuk, IA – The Southeast Iowa Redemption Center can remain open, as long as it complies with certain city requirements. The Keokuk Board of Adjustment chose not to revoke the facility's special use permit after a lengthy complaince review. The redemption center recieved the permit, in January of 2005, for its recycling operations. Recently, questions surfaced as to whether the facility was complying with the requirements of the permit. Community Development Director, Pam Broomhall, says owner Brian Boyd has brought the facility into compliance. Broomhall says the board will revoke the permit, in the future, if recycling is not being done in an enclosed building or if materials are not being stored in containers. A fire recently destroyed the building where recycling operations had been taking place. The city has deemed the property, along 7th Street, an unsafe building that cannot be used at this time. The special use permit is site-specific, so if recycling operations are moved to a new location, a new permit would be needed.
