Fort Madison Seeking Historic District

Fort Madison, IA – Fort Madison is working on its application to receive a national historic district designation. Planning and Zoning Director, Ed Basch, says the proposed district would stretch from 6th Street to 10th Street on Avenues G and H, though changes are still possible. He says volunteers are still collecting information on the roughly 100 properties within the proposed district. Basch says all of that information must be worked into the city's application, which he says should be submitted at the state and federal levels this summer. He says properties within a national historic district could qualify for tax credits, and the city could be in line for grant money it would not have recieved without the district. Basch says the designation could also be a marketing tool for Fort Madison.
