Macomb, IL – McDonough County might try a contract approach to cleaning up some of its junkyard areas. Board member Alice Henry returned from a conference with an example of a contract that St. Clair county uses. She says it could allow the county to clean up a blighted area, keep proceeds from the sale of scrap to help pay costs, and make the owner promise not to allow trash to accumulate again. Henry says the contracat is being forwarded to county authorities including the Law and Legal Committee for discussion. Henry says the current high price of scrap metal could allow the county to cover more of the cost of a clean-up. She says the county would also be rid of junk that can cause groundwater pollution or provide a breeding place for mosquitos.
