Carthage, IL – Carthage aldermen are considering both short and long-term ways to augment their water supply. Mayor Jim Nightingale says the lake is at its lowest level in his memory, and does not seem to be re-filling quickly. He says aldermen have approved changing the control systems to allow drawing more water from Hamilton through the pipeline. He says the current maximum is about 50,000 gallons per day. They want to increase that to 140,000 gallons per day, which would cover about 60 percent of an average day's usage. Nightingale says using a well the city has drilled would be a possibility. He says the flow is good, but the taste of the water is bad. He says using the well could require a reverse osmosis filter, which would cost about half-a-million dollars.
