Macomb, IL – The Western Illinois University Board of Trustees will decide whether the university should observe Presidents' Day instead of Lincoln's birthday. That might not seem like much of an issue, but it generated some passionate discussion during the board's most recent meeting. Trustee Michael Houston said Abraham Lincoln is a true hero who's considered the greatest American president. He believes the nation has moved away from honoring its heroes and says Lincoln's birthday should be recognized in Illinois instead of holding a generic Presidents' Day holiday. Despite Houston's impassioned plea, the BoT voted 4-3 to approve first reading of a resolution to change WIU's February holiday from Lincoln's birthday to Presidents' Day. The second and final reading will be held at the March meeting. If it's approved, the change will go into effect during the 2010-2011 school year. Supporters of the change point out that surveys of students, faculty, civil service workers, and administrators show there is support for observing Presidents' Day. The change would give Western the same day off as public elementary, middle, and high schools.
