Fort Madison, IA – Economic development leaders in Lee County are ready to work with the new owner of a Fort Madison landmark. Economic Development Director, Lowell Junkins, says his office has had no direct contact with representatives of Fort Madison Properties, LLC. The company, which Junkins believes is based outside of Iowa, has purchased the Shaeffer Pen Plant and 8 acres of land from Bic USA for $550,000. Junkins says this is a good sign for future development of the property. Bic USA had announced plans to close the plant 6 months ago. It has since said that operations would continue until mid-2008. Roughly 40 employees still work at the Fort Madison plant.
