Fort Madison Limiting Sex Offender Residency

Fort Madison, IA – Fort Madison is trying to further limit where sex offenders can live within the city. The city council has approved the first reading of a measure that would expand the list of child-oriented facilities that a sex offender cannot line near in Fort Madison. City Manager Larry Dinwiddie says sex offenders would not be able to live within 2000 feet of a public park, pool, library, marina, or a recreation trail. He says the measure should bring Fort Madison into compliance with state code regarding sex offenders. Sex offenders who are in jail or prison, under an order of commitment, or live near one of the newly-included child-oriented facities, prior to the measure taking effect, would be exempt. The measure must still be approved 2 more times.
