Keokuk, IA – One city council member wants Keokuk to do more to both help the environment and save the city money. After watching former Vice President Al Gore's documentary on global warming, Alderman Bill Olmsted says he went out and replaced all of the light bulbs in his apartment. He wants city government to follow suit. Every time a new light bulb is needed in a city office, Olmsted says the city should install a compact fluorescent bulb, instead of a standard incandescent bulb. While the fluorescents cost more, up front, they are supposed to last several years longer. The fluorescent bulbs, which require less electricty to operate, do include mercury, which could cause disposal issues. The Keokuk city council seemed favorable to the idea and is scheduled to vote on the proposal at its next meeting.
