Lawmaker Says Governor's Speech Historic Moment

Des Moines, IA – For one Southeast Iowa lawmaker, Governor Tom Vilsack's final Condition of the State speech was somewhat historic. Republican Representative Dave Heaton of Mount Pleasant says his relationship with Vilsack goes well beyond their time in Des Moines. He says Vilsack was his first opponent when he ran for office. Despite his connection to Vilsack, Heaton says the speech surprised him in that it covered both accomplishments and calls for action by the legislature and Governor-Elect Chet Culver. Heaton says he is concerned about whether the state has enough money to pay for all of the new initiatives being discussed in Des Moines. He says his goals are to increase funding for mental health care and to add prison staff within the Department of Corrections.
