Lee County Drivers License Facilities Short-Staffed

Keokuk, IA – Staffing shortages are impacting when residents can get a drivers license in Lee County. Treasurer Janet Strunk says her office has had as few as 8 workers, in recent weeks, due to retirements and transfers. She says the office had 14 employees at the end of 2005. Strunk's goal is to keep each of the drivers license facilities open for 20 hours a week. She says that could be difficult, though, with several new hires on staff. Strunk says special training and clearance is required to issue drivers licenses. THe county has discussed operating only one facility, or eliminating the service entirely, in an effort to save money.
