Keokuk, IA – City government is set to become more "energy efficient" in Keokuk. The city council has approved a proposal that calls for all city departments to start using compact fluorescent light bulbs instead of standard incandescent bulbs. While the fluorescent bulbs are more expensive, they are supposed to last much longer and use less electricity. Alderman Bill Olmsted, who brought the idea forward, says the switch will save Keokuk money and help the environment. Public Works Director, Bill Richards, says 16 standard light bulbs have already been replaced with the fluorescent bulbs. The city does not have to replace all of the standard bulbs immediately. Employees can wait until a bulb burns out. Fluorescent bulbs contain a small amount of mercury, so special care must be taken when throwing them away. The Keokuk School Board could discuss a similar measure in the near future.
