Galesburg, IL – Galesburg's role in the underground railroad is now officially recognized by the National Park Service. The recognition means the city will be included in park service literature and on its website. Owen Muelder, who is director of the Galesburg Colony Underground Railroad Freedom Station at Knox College, is pleased to have an independent body give its recognition and sanction. He points out abolitionists founded the city and the college in 1837 and there were numerous locations in Galesburg that took part in the underground railroad. The center is housed in the former Knox County Jail on the east side of campus. But Muelder hopes to move it into Alumni Hall within the next few years to provide more space.
