Keokuk, IA – Getting a passport now takes a little longer. Anyone entering the United States, by plane, from Mexico, Canada, or the Caribbean must now have a valid passport. Lee County Recorder, Larry Holtkamp, says the average wait time to receive a passport, several years ago, was about six weeks. He says that number jumped to eight weeks following Hurricane Katrina. While the workload will likey go up, Holtkamp says a passport can be produced much faster, at an additional cost. He says it takes his office anywhere from 15 minutes to longer than 1 hour to complete the paperwork required to obtain a passport.
