Keokuk, IA – The 2 teens, charged with bringing a gun to Keokuk High School, don't appear to have been planning to harm anyone. Dillon Howell, 14, and Derrick Huston, 14, both of Keokuk, have been charged with 2 felonies: carrying a weapon on school grounds and unauthorized possession of an offensive weapon. During court testimony, school resource officer Broc Galbreath said Huston was pulled out of class, Monday, and the 22-caliber pistol was found in his backpack. While questioning Huston, Galbreath says it was determined that Howell brought the unloaded gun onto campus, from his home, to show Huston. Searches of several lockers and classrooms yielded no other weapons or ammunition. Galbreath said a student saw the gun during class, Monday morning, and reported it to an associate teacher, who went to the high school principal. Galbreath said the serial number on the handgun matches the number on a stolen gun from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Howell's attorney, Steve Swan of Keokuk, says the gun may have been purchased legally, by Howell's father, from a sporting goods store in Fort Madison. During questioning, Galbreath said it did not appear that Howell or Huston had any plans to use the gun for bad purposes and agreed that it appeared to be a bad mistake. The court found there was probable cause in both cases. Howell and Huston will remain in custody until they meet with juvenile court officers. They could eventually be released to the custody of their parents. The Keokuk School District says Howell and Huston will be expelled for at least one year, but no date has been set for a hearing.
