Fort Madison, IA – Property taxes could be on the rise in Fort Madison. The city council has finalized the city's $30,000,000 budget for the upcoming fiscal year. As part of the spending plan, the property tax rate will jump by 77 cents. City Manager Larry Dinwiddie says a spike in insurance costs as well as other employee benefits, led to the rate increase. Mayor Steve Ireland says the budget does not call for any lay-offs or cuts in services, which could help economic development efforts. The spending plan also includes funding for a new site manager at Old Fort Madison, pay hikes for city employees, and money for the construction of a new water plant.
