Residents Continue to Oppose Rezoning

Macomb, IL – A plan that would allow for more rental housing near the WIU campus is raising the ire of some residents - and at least one alderman says he'll probably vote against it. The case concerns a pair of plots in the 300 block of North McArthur Street. They're zoned M-1 for light manufacturing, but the owner wants that changed to R-4 for multi-family residential. Areas directly to the north and west are already zoned R-4. But neighborhood residents say there are too many rental units in that part of the city. Ken Loquist says the neighborhood has become a ghetto in the past ten years and urged aldermen to reject the rezoning. Other neighborhood residents also voiced opposition during Monday's committee of the whole meeting. Alderman At Large Dennis Moon joined them, saying the city needs to resolve issues concerning parking and trash before any more rezoning is done. He expects to vote against the change when the city council makes its decision on the matter next week.
