Keokuk, IA – The Lee County Board of Supervisors says state lawmakers should change Iowa's sex offender residency laws. The Board wants the law that prohibits sex offenders from living within 2000 feet of a child care facility, a public school, or a private school, to be repealed. Lee County Sheriff Buck Jones says creating that boundary does not go far enough. He says the current law has led to sex offenders going underground and not registering in a community. He says a legislative proposal, that would prohibit sex offenders from being on school groungs or at a child care center without prior permission, would be more effective. Lawmakers in Des Moines are expected to debate that measure in the near future.
