Carthage, IL – Carthage will cease paying its watershed farmers not to use Atrazine. Mayor James Nightingale says the city began payments to farmers in the late 1990s, when elevated levels of the herbicide showed up in the water supply. He says recent tests have shown no problem, thought the water will continue to be tested monthly. Nightingale says the city can negotiate with farmers if the Atrazine begins to show up again in the reservoir. About two-thirds of the 1,800 acre watershed is cropland.
