Graduation Rates Low In Southeast Iowa

Keokuk, IA – Three Southeast Iowa school districts rank at the bottom of the list when it comes to graduation rates. The Iowa Department of Education's graduation report for the 2005-2006 school year has the Burlington, Fort Madison, and Keokuk school districts in the bottom ten, statewide. Keokuk's rate of just under 69% was the lowest in Iowa. While the district is disappointed with the numbers, Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Lora Wolff, says Keokuk feels the roughly 11% drop, from the year before, is a one year situation. Wolff says at least 30 students, the state considers drop-outs, have actually returned to school or are enrolled in a GED program and she says the district is reaching out to others. Iowa's overall graduation rate was just under 91%.
