Keokuk, IA – A long term economic development deal for Lee County was accepted Tuesday morning... then rejected a few minutes later. The Board of Supervisors initially approved giving the Lee County Economic Development Group more than $800,000 over the next 3 years to continue operations. The move was pending the approval of legal counsel, which County Attorney Mike Short would not provide, citing state code and contract language. That forced the supervisors to re-examine a proposal that would provide the same level of funding over 3 years, but also require several changes in how LCEDG operates. The measure would add 2 new members to the board of directors, require new members be approved by the supervisors, and expand financial reporting requirements. The supervisors could vote on the new proposal next week.
