Canton, MO – One Northeast Missouri school district is asking its voters for some help in paying for basic operating expenses. Superintendent David Tramel says changes to Missouri's school funding formula will result in less new money coming into the Canton R-V school district over the next five years. He says those changes and a state mandated increase in teacher pay have resulted in financial problems for the district. Tramel says Canton must now go to the voters to ask for help in making ends meet. He says a $0.58 increase in the operating tax levy rate could generate as much as $200,000. Even with that increase, though, Tramel says staff cuts could still be needed because of declining enrollments.
