Macomb, IL – The Illinois Department of Transportation says it will not reduce the speed limit on Route 67 in Macomb. The stretch in question is between Pierce Street and University Drive. The Macomb Women's Club asked for the limit to be reduced from 40 mph to 30 mph because of safety concerns regarding that hilly stretch. But in a letter to the city, IDOT says it conducted a speed study and found the speed limit should remain 40 mph. IDOT also noted there were a lot of violators and suggested the city increase enforcement. The agency added "Studies have shown when the speed limit is artificially lowered to try and get vehicles to slow down; there is an even greater discrepancy in speeds, which increases the number and severity of crashes."
