Medication Coillection to be Organized

Macomb, IL – A collection of old medication will be organized by the Tri County Resource and Waste Management Council. Director Chad Bratz says the EPA will incinerate the medication if local organizations collect it. He says the standard way to dispose of old or excess medication has been to flush it, but Bratz says this is affecting streams, lakes and wildlife. He says in one instance, four out of five of the fish were female in a stream affected by estrogen from birth control pills. The medication is not affected by normal waste treatment procedures, and though the water is free of biological components, it still has the chemicals that came from medical treatment. Bratz says his organization will probably try to work with law enforcement and county health departments to set up a series of collection points.
