Abingdon, IL – The former Abingdon Sanitary Pottery plant will get an EPA cleanup to remove high levels of lead in the soil. Project Manager Lance Range of the Illinois EPA says state guidelines allow 400 parts per million in residential area soil. He says some parts of the six-acre site on the south side of town showed levels of 155,000 parts per million. He says the EPA will dig up and haul away kup to four feet of soil in some locations. Range says the lead came from glazes used in pottery making, along with some of the colors that were used. He says the EPA will give Abingdon Potterys successor, Briggs Manufacturing, a chance to do the clean-up. If they decline, then the EPA will truck the contaminated soil to a hazardous materials landfill and charge the cost to the company.
