Beardstown Getting Bigger Barge Facilities

Beardstown, IL – A new firm in Beardstown is building facilities to handle large quantities of containerized shipping. Roger Hendricksen of the cooperative, American Inland Port, says the move will let containers travel on the Mississippi and Illinois up to Beardstown for delivery by truck to the central Illinois region. He says this will lower shipping costs, and avoid congestion on either west coast ports, or in Chicago and Saint Louis. He says the empty containers will receive a plastic lining and be used to ship specialty food crops to Asia, where Beardstown firms are already sending their products. Hendricksen says Beardstown already has basic crane facilities for loading containers. He says larger cranes will be added as demand grows.
