Carthage, IL – One of Tuesday's closest races in Hancock County has now gotten even closer. At the end of the night, it looked like newcomer Nicholas Capaldo had edged out incumbent Janice Gooding, by 3 votes, for the 4th and final seat on the Warsaw School Board. County Clerk Kerry Asbridge says several absentee ballots have since been counted. The latest tally shows that Gooding made up the deficit and actually tied Capaldo. With no ballots outstanding, Asbridge says Illinois law requires the winner be chosen by a random method. He will place 30 numbers in a hat and the low number drawn will be the winner.
Meanwhile, Asbridge says a couple of write-in candidates were also victorious Tuesday night. In LaHarpe, Vicki Burford will fill out an unexpired 2-year term in Ward 1 after defeating David Pence, whose name appeared on the ballot. Jason Gold was also selected as one of the four commissioners elected in Dallas City. Asbridge says Burford and Gold were eligible to win, without being on the ballot, because they filed the necessary paperwork before the election.
