Canton, IL – The Mudcat catfish is the new mascot of Spoon River College. it won 92 percent of the vote in a poll of faculty, students and staff. Now an ad hoc committee is accepting illustrations of just what a Mudcat looks like. The five selections will be voted on next month to determine the final look of the mascot. President Robert Ritschel says the former mascot, a Crusader knight, was not being used, did not appear on athletic uniforms, and was not even available in the bookstore. Students began a campaign last fall to replace the mascot. This spring the Board of Trustees asked for a vote to choose the mascot. The other final candidate was a Miner because of extensive coal mining in parts of the college district.
