Keokuk, IA – It remains unclear if a traffic signal study in downtown Keokuk can get underway next week.
The city plans to turn off at least a half dozen Main Street stop lights, between 2nd and 14th streets, starting May 1. The study would last about 30 days.
Code Revision Subcommittee Chair, Bill Olmsted, who opposes the study, says city code requires the traffic signals be turned on and maintained. He believes the city can only turn the stop lights off by ordinance, which could take as long as five weeks to accomplish.
Public Works Director Bill Richards says he will discuss the issue with City Attorney Tom Marion.
Prior to Thursday's workshop, Marion said the council could conduct the study with a simple resolution, which could be approved at the next council meeting.

* The traffic signals that would be turned off are expected to be at the intersections of Main and 3rd, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 11th, and 12th.
* Olmsted's committee would be charged with drafting the ordinance, if needed.
