Keokuk, IA – A 30-day study of Keokuk's downtown traffic signals is once again on hold... at least for the time being.
The Keokuk City Council voted unanimously, last night, to reject a study that would have temporarily turned off the stoplights at 7 Main Street intersections.
Some study supporters even cast no votes because they wanted to amend the plan so that only 4 of the 13 downtown stop lights would be turned off... not the proposed 7.
But by voting down the original proposal before an amendment could be made, the measure died.
With no legal counsel at the meeting, the city council decided not to try a second vote last night.
The new study, proposed last night, would call for the signals at the intersections of Main and 3rd, 9th, 11th, and 12th to be turned off.
The city bolted stop signs, covered in black material, into the new sidewalks at the seven intersections in anticipation of the study passing.

All told, the traffic signal debate lasted about 90 minutes.
Mayor Dave Gudgelsays the stop signs will remain in place in case a study is approved in 2 weeks.
