Macomb, IL – This year, WIU became one of the only universities in the nation to add security to its buses.
The director of Go West says this was done in response to vandalism and other problems. In fact, he says more damage occured to buses last semester than all other semesters combined.
The security guards were chosen from an elite group of Law Enforcement and Justice Administration majors. They ride along on the weekend buses that make stops near the downtown night spots.
The security guards constantly check to make sure passengers are not damaging the buses. They also work to prevent confrontations between students from escalating into fights.
Reporter Alex Heuer rode along with security guard Nick Schnack on a Saturday night to get a feel for what the job is like. You can listen to his feature by clicking on the audio button.
