Cass County Assessed Value to Drop

Beardstown, IL – An agreement between the Cargill Pork Processing Plant and Cass County will cut the plant's value from $29 million to $13 million. The agreement closes several months of negotiations that began when Cargill told the county it believed the plant was over-assessed. That was due to the perceived age of the plant, and that equipment was not contemporary and efficient. Board Chairman David Parish had no comment. The agreement calls for Cargill to pay taxing units in the county $1.3 million dollars over four years as Payments in Lieu of Taxes. The money is to help those units adjust to lower tax revenues.
