Keokuk, IA – The giant white tent that has stood for months along Keokuk's Main Street has finally been taken down.
Ameren UE was using the tent to prevent odors and vapors from escaping while the company cleaned up the site of a former manufactured gas plant.
Spokesman Mike Cleary says the work is almost complete, as 23,000 tons of soil containing coal-tar residues have been removed.
He says Ameren UE will spend the next 30 days restoring the site, including grass seeding and street repairs.
Once all of the work is completed, Cleary says the property can be re-developed with very few environmental restrictions.
