Container Port Might Speed Route 67 Work

Beardstown, IL – A container port being constructed in Beardstown could also help speed progress on the four-laning of U-S route 67.

Cass County economic development educator Steve Twaddle says shippers can use the Illinois River to avoid having to go through all of the locks on the Mississippi River.

He says keeping containers on barges until they reach Beardstown will shorten the distance the containers have to be shipped on trucks or railroad cars.

He believes that will greatly increase the flow of traffic on Route 67.

In addition ... loading containers for Asia at Beardstown will mean more of the trip can be made on lower-cost barges .
