Mount Sterling – Tax bills will be late in Brown County this year and the payments to local governments even later.
County Board Chairman David Ferrell says the local governments have been notified that they might not receive payments until October.
In addition, the county is only sending out one tax bill this year instead of the usual two.
The reason for the delay is problems the county has had complying with new state requirements for assessing farmland.
In addition, the county had to set up a Geographic Information System to keep track of its land and soil types.
Ferrell says Brown County was one of the later ones in Illinois to contract with a firm that could set up the system.
He says the assessor's office is currently checking the data and could publish assessment changes by early August.
Then there is a 30-day period for protests before the treasurer's office can prepare and mail the tax bills.
He says the agency most likely to be short will the the Brown County school district.
