Commission Endorses "Family" Definition

Macomb, IL – A revised definition of "family" has been endorsed by the Macomb Planning Commission.

The changes were proposed to clarify the city's zoning laws. The city says the idea is to prevent homes in single family neighborhoods from being rented out to too many people. The zoning for those neighborhoods is R-1 and R-2.

The planning commission held a lengthy public hearing and discussion before recommending the changes. That recommendation will be sent to the city council, which will have final say on whether the new definition is implemented.

You can listen to Community Development Coordinator Ed Basch talk about the proposed changes by clicking on the audio button.

Additional information:

*Residents in neighborhoods around the WIU campus have complained that zoning codes are not being followed. Some people at the public hearing suggested that enforcement remains the biggest issue.
