Maquoketa Caves State Park

June 15, 2007 – This week, reporter Tyson Terhune's series Tri States Day Trips took us to a state park in eastern Iowa for a different way to get out of the sun. Maquoketa Cave's valley contains entrances to more than 30 caves.

In addition, a small creek runs through the floor of the valley between moss covered logs and the many wildflowers that grow freely along the ground and steep slopes.

Visitors of all skill levels can explore the caves. Some equipment might help, including a flashlight and possibly a helmet. Wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.

An excellent trail system connects the caves, which have names such as Rainy Day and Ice Cave. The walls of the caves have been smoothed by hundreds of years of running water.

Camping and other woodland activities can also be done at Maquoketa Caves State Park, which is located about one hour north of the Quad Cities. Entrance to the park is free. Camping is $10 per night and is open to tents as well as campers.

The series Tri States Day Trips will be broadcast on Tri States Public Radio on Fridays in June during the 7:30am and 4:30pm newscasts.
