Carthage Groups Work to Refine Zoning

Carthage, IL – Three Carthage groups are working to define what zoning laws they want for newly-annexed city land near Route 336.

Community Developer Brenda Pyattsays the Chamber of Commerce, the towns Plan Commission and the Carthage Industrial Development Group are cooperating.

She says the newly-annexed land is not yet zoned. However, a feasibility study for the land on the southeast corner of town suggested zoning should include retail and industrial lots. The newly-annexed land is also part of the city's Tax Increment Financing district.

Pyatt says the groups agree they want regulations that will not drive away developers. However, they want to maintain aesthetic development that will serve as a welcoming entrance to the town.

She says when the groups reach a consensus, the plan commission will recommend the zoning rules to the city council for approval. Then, the suggestions would become ordinances.
