Carthage, IL – Groups in Hancock County are expanding the number of wayside markers they'd like as part of the statewide "Looking for Lincoln" program.
The program helps pay for roadside signs highlighting places in the state that are connected with Lincoln's travels.
Carthage Economic Development Coordinator Brenda Pyatt says groups in the county are pledging more than $30,000 to cover the local share of the cost. State grants cover up to two-thirds of the cost.
She says most signs in the county are connected with spots Lincoln visited during his 1858 campaign against Stephen Douglas for a U.S. Senate seat. There could also be one at the Hancock County Courthouse where Pyatt says Lincoln lost a trial.
She estimates the cost of each sign at up to $12,000.
The project involves economic development, tourism and Chamber of Commerce representatives.
Pyatt expects to hear whether the group will receive the grant funds within two months.
