Macomb, IL – There are plans to build a radiation therapy center to treat cancer patients in Macomb.
The Radiation Oncology Office would be overseen by Dr Saleem Mahmood. He already operates a similar facility in Jacksonville.
Dr Mahmood says currently patients from Macomb and surrounding communities have to make long trips to receive radiation therapy. Those trips can be tiring for the patients.
The city needs to issue a special use permit before construction can begin. Aldermen listened to first reading of the ordinance Monday night and could give final approval in two weeks.

Additional information:
*The center would be located in the 400 block of East Grant Street. Mahmood hopes to begin treating patients in Macomb early next year. He expects to see 100 new patients every year.
*Mahmood believes that in addition to his office in Jacksonville, the closest treatment facilities to Macomb right now are in Quincy, Galesburg, Burlington, and Peoria.
*The Macomb facility would be affiliated with McDonough District Hospital.
