Macomb, IL – Western Illinois' congressman says the nation needs to end its dependence on foreign oil, but he's opposed to drilling for energy off America's coasts.
Before beginning its July recess, the House voted against ending the 26 year ban on the drilling. The vote was 196 for and 233 against lifting the moratorium.
Democrat Phil Hare (D-IL) joined the majority in defeating the bill. He says the measure did not address environmental concerns. He also says supporters failed to show the plan would be cost efficient.
Hare would like to place a greater emphasis on ethanol, bio-diesel, wind, and solar power. Ethanol has its share of critics, but Hare believes researchers are just beginning to scratch the surface of what can be done with it.
Hare made his comments during a recent stop in Macomb. You can listen to more of his comments by clicking on the audio button.
Additional information:
*Hare continues to promote the Patriot Corps program. It would offer tax credits to small businesses that stay in America and expand. He thinks it will be introduced shortly after lawmakers return to Washington DC.
*Hare thinks businesses could also be helped if the government offered a healthcare program that anyone could opt to join. He would want such a plan to include portability and choice.
*Hare was in Macomb to visit the Western Illinois Business and Technology Center.
