Montrose, IA – The Lee County group Citizens for Public Safety has begun a series of informational meetings about a jail bond issue on the ballot in August.
Sheriff Buck Jones says he was surprised by the lack of questions at the first meeting in West Point.
However, Jones says he expects questions to come up in later meetings.
He says the goal is to explain the roughly $5.4 million bond issue which will be on a special election ballot Aug. 21.
He says the county will add about $1 million for the project. It will include both expanding and renovating the current overcrowded Lee County Jail.
In addition, Jones says the project will replace three aging modular cell blocks which are used to hold prisoners.
Jones says several further meetings are scheduled. They include:
July 18, 7 p.m. at the Pilot Grove Bank in Houghton.
July 19 at the Jackson Township Fire Department.
July 24 at 7 p.m. at the community room of the Pilot Grove Bank in Donnelson.
July 26 at 2 p.m. at the Fort Madison Care Facility.
August 1 at 7 p.m. at the Ivor Fowler Community Building in Montrose.
August 2 at 7 p.m. at the Keokuk Labor Hall.
August 4 at the Ivy Bake Shop in Fort Madison.
