Macomb, lL – A conservation group wants landowners who will plant some of their acres for wildlife food and cover.
The LaMoine River Ecosystem Partnership wants to apply for state grants that will pay landowners for wildlife plantings.
Farm Service Agency County Director Joe Erlandson says the program is similar to the Conservation Reserve Program but with added emphasis on food and cover crops.
He says the plantings will still have the effect of reducing soil erosion while they feed birds and mammals.
The Ecosystem Partnership is seeking the state grants as part of its program of enhancing the natural resources of the watershed. The group leveraged around $250,000 in grants last year.
The meeting will be Tuesday evening at 7 at the Macomb City Hall Community Room.
The State Acres for Wildlife program will use existing practices and framework as the current Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program.
Landowners can receive grants for soil rental payments and land restoration.
Contracts will run between 10 and 15-years.
