Montrose, IA – Montrose's newest city council member is ready to help the city grow and expand.
Mary Van Pelt says the timing is just right for her to give back to the community.
The Montrose City Council picked Van Pelt, who works for the Central Lee School District, to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Kevin Hartman.
Van Pelt plans to run in November to keep the seat she will occupy until the election.
She would like to see more people get involved in city government in Montrose, especially attending city council meetings.
City Clerk Celeste Cirinna says Van Pelt was one of two residents who made their case for appointment during a special meeting of the Montrose city council.
Residents could still call for a special election to fill the seat.

* Kevin Hartman won his seat as a write-in candidate during a special election last year.
* Hartman replaced Mark Holland, who was appointed to fill the previous vacancy on the Montrose City Council.
