Carthage, IL – The Carthage City Council could be in its new home within six weeks.
Mayor Pro-Tem Donna Walker says crews are re-finishing the former public library building, which served as a city building until the 1950s.
She says the new quarters will give more room for files and space for a map room.
Walker says the furnishings for a kitchen have been donated to the city, including cabinets, a refrigerator and a stove.
She says this will allow groups using meeting rooms to make coffee or serve some food.
In addition, the building now has an emergency generator sufficient to power the building and the nearby fire station.
The Carthage Police Station will be on the second floor of the new city building. There will also be a meeting room for scouts.
The current city hall will be used for tourism and museum activities.
Walker believes the new city offices could be functioning by mid-September.
