Macomb, IL – Macomb aldermen will consider amendments to an ordinance that will change the requirements for paving driveways and parking lots.
At a Committee of the Whole meeting, Alderman Dave Dorsett suggested the changes to the ordinance that would have required the paving. The ordinance was passed about ten years ato, and was designed to give property owners time to comply.
Some of Dorsett's changes included not requiring paving for single-family homes and not requiring it for rental property that would require four or fewer parking spaces.
It also suggests that businesses required to have 10 or fewer spaces would be exempt from the paving requirements.
Another part of his proposal would have required excess parking spaces to be used for green space.
A standing-room-only crowd wanted the ordinance changed. Some said the paving was too much of a burden on small business owners or home owners.
Others said they had purchased their properties but not been told that eventually the driveways would have to be made "dustfree." The acceptable methods would only be concrete, asphalt or oil-and-chip.
Mayor Mick Wisslead directed the ordinance be re-drafted with amendments and brought up at next week's council meeting.
He's in favor of a complete re-drawing of the ordinance and sending it back to the Planning Commission for extensive discussion.
Wisslead wants an ordinance that anyone can read and understand.
