Macomb, IL – A proposed street program for Macomb would change the public works department's emphasis to maintenance of streets.
Mayor Mick Wisslead says there had been concernes that too much of the street work was being done by city crews instead of the private sector.
The proposal for a $29-million dollar program includes some basic street maintenance equipment that Wisslead says would allow the department to do repairs and maintenance. He says new construction on major jobs would be bid out.
He says the proposal also suggests updating the standards that private contractors must follow when they construct streets in a development. /Wisslead says this could lower maintenance costs in the future.
Financing is still undetermined, but a combination of existing funds, a half-cent increase in the local-option sales tax and bonding has been suggested.
