Sullivan Opts Out of Congress Race

Rushville, IL – Illinois State Senator John Sullivan says he will not run for Congress in the 18th District.

The Rushville Democrat had been mentioned as a likely candidate to replace the retiring Ray LaHood, who announced he will not run after his current term ends.

Sullivan says he carefully considered running, because he lives in the 18th District. However, he said the change in lifestyle and the effect on his family were among the reasons for not trying for the national office.

He did try for the party nomination to replace Lane Evans when Evans retired from the 17th District post. However, Evans' legislative assistant Phil Hare received the nod and is now serving.

LaHood says he announced his retirement early to all competition in the race to replace him.
